Aubagne, birthplace of Marcel Pagnol

Marcel Pagnol, the famous 20th-century filmmaker and writer, was born in Aubagne at 16 cours Barthélémy on February 28, 1895. It was here that he spent his childhood and adolescence, before moving to Marseille with his parents. Nevertheless, he returned with his family on vacation to Bastide Neuve in the hills above Aubagne.

Marcel Pagnol appreciates the simple charm of Provence , and his films pay tribute to the region’s landscapes and people. Adapted all over the world, Pagnol’s work remains a great success. The town of Aubagne proudly pays homage to this native of the region, with a visit to Pagnol’s house.

You’ll then discover Angèle’s farm before taking a picnic break in the heart of the Garrigue. You’ll also pass Pagnol’s vacation home, La Bastide Neuve, before arriving at the village of La Treille. The guided walk ends with a stop at the cemetery where the filmmaker and writer is laid to rest.

This 12 km (approx. 5 hrs.) Pagnol hike , both sporting and cultural, traverses the superb landscapes of the Garlaban massif. You’ll see the natural setting for the film “Le temps des secrets”, directed by Christophe Barratier, which depicts Marcel Pagnol’s childhood memories. Your storytelling guide will tell you a few anecdotes and show you all the exterior locations where the film was shot (grotte du hibou, Croix du Garlaban, etc.).
